Dallas National Insurance Company (DNIC) was formed after the merger of the California Indemnity Insurance Co. and Dallas Fire Insurance Company founded in July 1962. California Indemnity Insurance Company was formed in the state of California and began operations in 1988. Dallas Fire Insurance Company was bought by Charles D. Wood Jr., an insurance businessman. The acquisition of DNIC was approved by the State of Texas Insurance Department in 2003. At that time, Texas authorized the company to write liability insurance within the state.
In 2004, California Indemnity Insurance Company was purchased by New York-headquartered FolksAmerica Holding Company. The next year, Charles D. Wood Jr. purchased the company. In September 2005, Wood sought to move the company’s domicile to Texas.
